The state of the art in materials analysis continues to advance with a fast pace and with these new analysis techniques come new opportunities for discovering details about our cultural heritage. The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) hosts large-scale research facilities such as the Swiss Light Source (SLS) and the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source (SINQ) where X-ray and neutron techniques are developed and made available to the research community in a „User Facility“ model. Some example materials analyses of cultural heritage objects will be presented and a wide variety of material types will be discussed, including metals, glass, jewels and organic materials such as hair.
