In the design of new healthcare facilities, ability to mitigate risk during design development is imperative. Simulation-based Hospital Design Testing (SbHDT) applies rigorous methodology anchored in evidence-based design, simulation, structed debriefing, and failure mode and effect analysis. SbHDT proactively tests the complex interface between people and the built environment. During design development for a 400-bed freestanding children’s hospital, frontline staff simulated episodes of care across 15 clinical areas. 722 latent conditions were identified, of those 456 required architectural design modifications, resulting in a cost avoidance of $90 million.
